About us

What can we tell you about us? We, that is Stefan, his wife Naomi and of course the two lazy cats, Smudge and Tammy (He, Austria, she, British, cats, Spaniards). We are all very lucky and enjoy every day anew in this wonderful, wonderful part of the world! Naomi and I are both from the hospitality industry. After a few years in large hotels in other European countries (we met in Geneva), we decided to travel a little and started with 6 months in Asia. Then, after a little more work in Austria and Germany, the backpacks were packed for another 2 years. Back in Austria we thought about the normal things like getting married, having children, building a house, etc. Originally we wanted to lease a mountain hut, but couldn’t find one so quickly, so it just became a pub/restaurant in Bavaria. Within the first year there was a crisis meeting between the two of us.

We came to the conclusion that the goals mentioned above did not justify such hard work with long hours. So we did not change the work, but the goals and thought again of a longer trip around the world. That motivated us enough to last 5 1⁄2 years. Now we stored our few things with a friend and set off … that was 1992 … Now you want to know where we were? What we did ? What we experienced? Come and stay with us for a while, and we’ll tell you!

When we returned to Europe in 1999, we were looking for a home, but rather not in the cold north. On the journey through Spain we entered the Alpujarra from the East and knew immediately that, that was it! We saw the house, La Rueda, (holiday home for 2 people with a heated, private pool, just outside of Orgiva) on a Monday and on the Friday it was bought!

Ornithologists will also find their paradise here, guests tell us that they have counted 25 different bird species that they could name and then many that they did not even know! After the renovation of the cottage and our own house was completed, we thought, what now? And decided to buy a ruin in Guajar Faragüit, which is now La Cueva – again 3 years of renovation and deprivation… the result are La Estrella (holiday home for up to 6 people) and El Sol (holiday home for up to 4 People), both with a small pool in a grotto, with integrated jacuzzi, heated with solar. In the neighboring village of Guajar Alto, a small stream is dammed up in summer, so we have a shady natural pool, large enough for adults to swim.

Then in 2014 we bought another half-dilapidated house here in Orgiva (Alpujarra, Sierra Nevada, Costa Tropical) and renovated it again for almost 3 years, which is today our jewel, the El Garzopo (holiday home for up to 8 people, 3 bathrooms, garage, Underfloor heating, solar hot water, heated, private pool). Naomi does not let me look at any more ruins now, therefore for the time being there will be no more renovation work! If you book with us, you pay no fees, you book directly from the owner.

Why this place?

There is something magical about this area, and we bought these houses without thinking twice, and we will never regret it! We are in the country in a small village with super nice neighbours. … and yet we are only 35 minutes away from the beaches of the Costa Tropical, Salobreña, Almuñecar, La Herrdaura, where you can also dive! Nerja with its stalactite caves and the quaint village of Frigiliana. From La Cueva it is only 20 minutes to the beaches. Here you can relax and enjoy the tranquility or take easy to very long hiking tours. Granada, with its Alhambra, is only 1 hour away from all houses. The villages of Alpujarra (Pampaneira, Bubion, Capileira and Trevelez) are from Orgiva 20 minutes or 1 hour from La Cueva. Here you can make countless, wonderful hikes up to Mulhacen and Veleta, the 2 highest mountains in Spain! Horse tours are also offered and for cyclists it is awesome, bikes can be rented either in Orgiva or in Velez de Benaudalla, ask us.
Climbing is also good here and even windsurfing.

In summer there are 2 great hiking tours in the water, either up the Rio Chillar at Nerja or the Rio Verde at Otivar – ask us. In winter, you can go skiing in the Sierra Nevada and in the afternoon sip your coffee or play golf on the beach (between Motril and Salobreña).Cordoba is just over 2 hours away, as are the Guadix cave houses or you take a day trip to the Cabo de Gata National Park with its natural sandy beaches.

There are also beautiful handicrafts (leather, pottery, knotted carpets, woodwork, etc.), especially In the villages of the Alpujarra and the local cheese and ham you also have to try, you can often get it here as tapas for the drinks! In Orgiva you can also take Spanish courses – ask us. The market day in Orgiva is Thursday, a colorful mix of leftover hippies from all over the world and the friendly locals.
