Visit the world famous Alhambra in Granada

Almost all of our guests go to Granada to visit the UNESCO-protected and world-famous Alhambra. Read Washington Irving’s book “Tales of the Alhambra”.
The Alhambra, named after the reddish color of its walls (arab: qa’lat al-Hamra ‘, red castle), is located on the al-Sabika hill on the left bank of the Darro river in the eastern part of the city opposite the Albaycín and Alcazaba (citadel). The Alhambra and Generalife complex is now one of the most boastful and important cultural landscapes in the world. From here you have wonderful views of the entire city and the opposite Albaycín.

The Alhambra is the most visited attraction in all of Spain, but since only a certain number of people are let in every day, the complex never feels crowded, and you can easily get lost in the beautiful gardens of the Generalife. You only have to visit the palace at a certain time (see ticket), you can stay in the gardens as long as you like, take a picnic with you!
A flamenco ballet takes place every summer in the Generalife – more about it under Fiestas, Ferias, Flamenco – pure Andalusian joie de vivre.

It is only a 15-minute walk from the Alhambra to the city or you can take one of the small public buses (ask the Tourist Info which buses), which will then take you over and up to the Albaycín, the romantic and beautiful old town district. Stroll through the narrow streets to Plaza de San Nicolas, which is located directly opposite the Alhambra, with the imposing mountain range of the Sierra Nevada behind – an incredible and breathtaking sight !! – especially in winter or spring when the mountains are covered with snow. From here, go down into the city, ideally along Calle Calderería Nueva, where you can choose from many cozy Arabian tea houses.

Granada itself is certainly worth a whole day of your vacation, a beautiful and romantic city that can be easily explored on foot – or you take the hop on-hop-off train.
Take a look at the Capilla Real, where the Catholic royal family is buried, the impressive cathedral right next to it or go to one of the Arab bathhouses (Hammam) (ask us!). The best ice cream shop in Granada is right opposite the cathedral, Los Italianos, Michele Obama and daughter have also enjoyed the icecream here!

A very recommendable, local bodega for a huge selection of tapas is the Bodega La Mancha, just behind Los Italianos – it couldn’t be more original and typical!
From our holiday home in Guajar Faragüit La Cueva it is only 55 minutes to Granada and from the holiday homes in Orgiva, El Garzopo and La Rueda about the same distance.
