Refurbishing La Rueda

Once the sale had gone through, we started with the renovation of the cottage in July 2000, todays
Holidayhome Orgiva, Andalucia. We did speak some Spanish, but had no idea about construction or
renovation! Neither did we know where to buy all the essential building materials etc….so it was all rather
challenging and adventurous for us to say the least:-)
Local expats recommended some workmen to us and finally we started with Ramon, a builder. Ramon
was not an easy person to be with and when we finished building, we opened a bottle of Cava to celebrate
his departure!!
We tried to use local materials as far as possible. The stones we got from the river bed and the reeds we
cut also down by the river, let them dry and then peeled them. Some beams we got from our
neighbour,Jose – we had to get them ourselves out of the nearby woods. The natural and partly handmade
terracota floor tiles and other terracota decoration we found in a small family factory (2 brothers) north of
Granada – they luckily even survived the last big recession!
At the beginning the cottage was thought for us to live in, while renovating the main house and then for
Naomis father, then from 2003 onwards we started to let this holidayhome Orgiva to holidaymakers from
all over the world, without a pool to start with. The property is ideal for Hiking holidays in the Alpujarras,
holidays with pet or just as a romantic retreat for two:-) , even for a long term rental in Andalucia.
